You can understand why these fine-scale subtleties matter for practical considerations like firefighting or protecting habitat for sensitive species. For firefighting, understanding how topography and wind interact during a fire can save lives by helping firefighters anticipate in which direction and how fast a fire will spread. For protecting habitat, studying fine-scale topography helps to identify fire refugia (areas that “should” have burned when the rest of the landscape did but escaped it) that can be all-important for wildlife species that are sensitive to fire.19 But does this fine-scale variation make things too complicated to estimate what will happen to fire regimes, at these scales, in a warming climate? It won’t be easy; formidable complexities are associated with this particular scale. To understand them, we need more background, which will come later in this chapter and in Chapter 8. Before that, we need to bring in some other players: smoke and its consequences, other disturbances, vegetation (as not just fuel), and the interactions of all these things in a non-stationary climate.
